Park Picnic: What to Add to Your Shopping List

Picnic basket with sandwiches, fruit and supplies on a blanket in the park

It doesn't take much: a sunny day, an open patch of grass, and the urge to eat outside instead of at the usual table. A park picnic is one of the easiest outings to put together, but it's also easy to get there and realise the most obvious thing is missing: a bag for used napkins, a bottle opener, somewhere to actually sit.

Here's a list built so you don't leave anything important at home.

Food: practical before elaborate

The golden rule of picnics: anything you can eat with your hands, or with minimal cutlery, wins every time.

  • Sandwiches or wraps, individually wrapped
  • Cold frittata, sliced
  • Raw veggie sticks (carrots, celery, peppers)
  • Hard cheeses, easy to cut without a board
  • Individually packaged cold cuts
  • Fruit that's easy to eat without much mess: grapes, apples, bananas
  • Something sweet: cookies, pre-sliced cake, dried fruit
  • Savoury snacks: pretzels, breadsticks, single-serve crisps

Drinks

  • Water, ideally in resealable bottles
  • Juice or iced tea
  • Ice, kept in a separate container if possible so it lasts longer
  • Reusable plastic or compostable cups

The gear everyone forgets

The smallest items are the ones that, when missing, take the shine off the afternoon.

  • Picnic blanket or rug
  • Paper napkins (bring more than you think you'll need)
  • Reusable or compostable cutlery
  • Paper or reusable plates
  • Trash bags, to carry rubbish home if there are no bins nearby
  • Bottle opener or corkscrew
  • Airtight containers for leftovers

  • Sunscreen
  • Insect repellent
  • A small handheld fan, for the hottest days
  • A hat for anyone staying out in the sun for a while

For after lunch

A good picnic often keeps going well past the meal itself — a few ideas so no one ends up staring at their phone.

  • A ball or a frisbee
  • A portable board game or a deck of cards
  • A book for anyone after some quiet time
  • Bubbles or a kite, if there are kids around

If the park is short on shade

Worth checking in advance whether your chosen park has trees or shaded areas. If not, a small pop-up gazebo or a beach umbrella can be the difference between a pleasant picnic and half an hour under direct sun.

Organise everything with Spesary

Build your list on Spesary with food, drinks, and gear sorted into separate sections, so you can check everything at a glance before heading out. If it's a group picnic, share the list with everyone else: each person brings their part, no duplicate sandwiches, and no one shows up without cutlery.

Because an afternoon at the park should only require picking the right patch of grass — not improvising at the last minute.
